Brighton Resort, Utah: A Legacy of Skiing Firsts

Nestled in the scenic Big Cottonwood Canyon, Brighton Resort boasts a rich history as Utah’s, and one of America’s, pioneering ski destinations. Its story intertwines with the tale of a hardworking Scottish immigrant family who laid the groundwork for a winter wonderland.

From Family Haven to Ski Paradise

William Stuart Brighton, arriving in Utah in the mid-1800s, established himself in Big Cottonwood Canyon. By the 1870s, his family ran a thriving business catering to miners traveling between Park City and Alta. Their one-room cabin transformed into the Brighton Hotel, a popular summer retreat renowned for delicious meals, lively entertainment, and stunning natural beauty.

The Birth of Utah’s Skiing Culture

The year 1936 marked a turning point. Recognizing the area’s potential for winter sports, members of the Alpine Ski Club constructed a rudimentary T-bar using an old elevator motor and wire. This simple contraption became the catalyst for Utah’s vibrant ski scene, with Brighton earning the distinction of the state’s first ski resort.

Embracing Growth and Maintaining Tradition

The decades that followed saw steady growth at Brighton. The first chairlift arrived in 1946, followed by expansions in terrain and facilities. Despite modernization, Brighton has remained true to its roots. It prioritizes exceptional skiing and snowboarding experiences over extensive amenities, fostering a dedicated community of passionate winter sports enthusiasts.

Today, Brighton Resort continues to thrive, offering a unique blend of history and modern amenities. Whether carving down legendary slopes or learning the basics, visitors can experience the legacy of the Brighton family and the spirit of Utah’s skiing heritage.
