Snowbird Mountain, Utah: A History of Steep Skiing and Bold Vision

Snowbird Mountain Webcams. Snowbird Mountain, a haven for skiers and snowboarders seeking epic terrain, boasts a rich history intertwined with perseverance and a love for the Wasatch Mountains. Founded in 1971, the resort wasn’t always the sprawling giant it is today. Its story begins with a man named Ted Johnson.

From Mining Claims to Mountain Playground: Ted Johnson’s Dream

Ted Johnson, a Californian who managed the Alta Lodge, envisioned a new ski resort nestled below Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon. In the mid-1960s, he began acquiring land, including defunct silver mining claims like the aptly named “Snowbird.” Johnson partnered with Texas oilman Dick Bass in 1969, securing the financing needed to turn his dream into reality.

Facing Challenges and Achieving Milestones: A 1971 Debut

Building a ski resort in a remote canyon presented its fair share of obstacles. Avalanches and tram malfunctions delayed the planned November 1971 opening. However, by December, Snowbird finally unveiled itself to the public. The initial offering included the iconic aerial tramway, three chairlifts, the Cliff Lodge (partially built), and the Snowbird Center.

Growth and Transformation: A Legacy of Innovation

Snowbird’s early years were marked by rapid expansion. New lodges, lifts, and meticulously planned ski runs transformed the initial patchwork of mining claims into a world-class resort. Interestingly, the Snowbird name isn’t a reference to the chickadees that flit through the area, but rather a nod to one of the original mining claims Johnson purchased.

Today, Snowbird continues to innovate. Recent years have seen the addition of The Summit, expanded snowmaking capabilities, and improved guest facilities. Despite these changes, Snowbird retains its core identity: a place where skiers and snowboarders can experience the thrill of steeps, deep powder, and breathtaking mountain scenery.
