Early Settlement and Agricultural Roots
The story of Draper begins in 1849 when Ebenezer and Phebe Brown established themselves in an area known as South Willow Creek. The Browns capitalized on the California Gold Rush by selling cattle to prospectors traveling west. Soon after, other families, including the Draper family for whom the city is named, arrived, and by 1852, a small community of 20 had taken root.
Agriculture became the cornerstone of Draper’s early economy. The fertile land and access to water from Willow Creek fostered a thriving farming community.
Facing Challenges and Building a Community
The year 1854 marked two significant events for Draper. The first post office was established, with Phebe Brown serving as the postmistress. However, this period also saw rising tensions with local Native American tribes. To address these concerns, settlers constructed a fort for protection during the winters of 1855 and 1856. Fortunately, the anticipated conflict never materialized, and the fort, though unfinished, stands today as a reminder of Draper’s pioneer spirit.
Transformation and Growth
Draper remained a predominantly agricultural town for much of the 20th century. A notable chapter in its history is the rise of the poultry industry in the mid-20th century. Draper became known as the “Egg Basket of Utah,” with its chicken farms supplying eggs across the country, even contributing to wartime efforts during World War II.
The late 20th century witnessed a significant shift in Draper’s character. The suburban sprawl that transformed Salt Lake County reached Draper, leading to a population boom. From a small farming community of 7,257 in 1990, Draper’s population ballooned to an estimated 47,710 by 2018. Today, Draper is a thriving city with a blend of residential neighborhoods, businesses, and historical sites that continue to tell the story of its remarkable journey.
