From Canals to Concrete: A Look at Hyrum Dam’s Construction

Prior to the dam’s construction in 1934-1935, local settlers relied on a 9-mile canal diverting water from the Little Bear River to irrigate their crops. The Bureau of Reclamation recognized the need for a more efficient and reliable water storage solution, leading to the dam’s construction project. Completed in April 1935, Hyrum Dam marked a significant advancement in water management for the area.

Design and Specifications

The dam itself is an impressive feat of engineering. It stands at a maximum height of 116 feet with a base width of 600 feet. The dam contains a total of 430,000 cubic yards of material, including earthfill, rockfill, riprap, and a gravel blanket. This substantial structure creates Hyrum Reservoir, boasting a total capacity of 18,685 acre-feet and a surface area of 480 acres.

Beyond Irrigation: The Rise of Hyrum State Park

The creation of Hyrum Reservoir opened doors for more than just irrigation. In 1959, Hyrum State Park was established around the reservoir, transforming the area into a popular recreation destination. Visitors are drawn to the park’s opportunities for fishing, boating, camping, swimming, and picnicking. The park’s excellent year-round fishery attracts anglers seeking bass, trout, perch, and bluegill.

Today, Hyrum Dam stands as a testament to human ingenuity and its enduring impact on the community. It continues to be a vital source of irrigation water and a cornerstone of Hyrum State Park, providing leisure opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
