From Dreams to Ski Runs: The Early Days (1960s)

The story of Nordic Valley begins in 1960 with Arthur Christiansen, a prominent developer from Ogden, Utah. Christiansen purchased the idyllic Silver Bell Ranch, a 900-acre mountain retreat, envisioning it as a summer oasis. However, the area’s winter beauty and existing tradition of sledding and tobogganing sparked a new idea. With the help of local enthusiasts, plans were drawn for a ski haven. The dream became reality in 1968 when the Nordic Valley Ski Area, with two chairlifts and several ski runs, welcomed its first skiers.

Growth and Recognition (1970s-2000s)

Nordic Valley quickly gained recognition for its challenging terrain and proximity to Ogden. The resort expanded in the 1970s with a double chairlift replacing the original tow rope on the beginner’s hill. This decade also saw the rise of freestyle skiing, with Bob Salerno, whose love for the sport was nurtured at Nordic Valley, becoming a multi-time World Freestyle Champion. The 1990s and early 2000s brought further development, including night skiing capabilities, solidifying Nordic Valley’s place as a favorite among Utah skiers. In fact, the resort’s challenging slopes served as a valuable training ground for skiers leading up to the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

Changing Hands and Looking Ahead (2000s-Present)

Nordic Valley has changed ownership several times since the late 1970s. In 2010, Wolf Mountain Ski Resort LLC acquired the resort, briefly changing the name to Wolf Mountain. However, when Wolf Mountain declared bankruptcy in 2014, the resort returned to its original moniker, Nordic Valley. Today, Nordic Valley is owned by Skyline Mountain Base and managed by Mountain Capital Partners. Despite the ownership changes, the resort’s commitment to providing a quality skiing experience for all levels remains constant. Plans for expansion and improvement are on the horizon, ensuring Nordic Valley’s place in Utah’s skiing legacy for years to come.
