The mountain’s history is intertwined with the Cobabe family. In the early 1900s, Frederick James Cobabe used the area as winter range for his sheep herd. Concerned about the land’s health, he implemented sustainable grazing practices that revitalized the previously overgrazed land. This dedication to conservation laid the groundwork for the healthy ecosystem Powder Mountain enjoys today.
A Doctor with a Vision
Frederick’s son, Dr. Alvin Cobabe, inherited the land in 1948. While riding horseback along the ridgeline, he envisioned the mountain’s potential as a ski resort. He began acquiring additional property, eventually amassing 14,000 acres by the time the resort opened in 1972.
From Local Gem to Modern Marvel
Powder Mountain’s early days were characterized by a single lift, the Sundown, and a focus on catering to skiers, not the masses. Over the years, the resort has seen ownership changes and expansions. New lifts opened up more terrain, and amenities like cat skiing were added. A notable milestone occurred in 1984 when Powder Mountain became the first Utah resort to permit snowboarding.
Today, Powder Mountain offers skiers and snowboarders an unparalleled experience. With its vast, uncrowded slopes and legendary powder snow, the resort continues to attract those seeking an authentic mountain adventure.
