Snowbasin Resort, Utah: A Storied History in the Wasatch Mountains

Snowbasin Resort Utah Webcams. Snowbasin Resort boasts a rich history intertwined with the development of skiing in North America. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Ogden in Utah, Snowbasin holds the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously operating ski areas in the United States. Its story stretches back to the 1930s, reflecting a passion for winter sports and a commitment to environmental restoration.

From Watershed Restoration to Winter Wonderland

In the aftermath of the Great Depression, Weber County, Utah, sought to revitalize the Wheeler Creek watershed, an area suffering from overgrazing and logging. With a vision for a recreational space, the county partnered with the U.S. Forest Service. Enter skiing legend Alf Engen, a pioneer of powder skiing, who played a pivotal role in designing the resort’s layout. The collaboration resulted in Snowbasin, named through a public contest in 1939.

A Mid-Century Ski Destination Takes Shape

Construction began in earnest in 1940, with the Civilian Conservation Corps helping to build the initial access road and ski runs. However, World War II delayed the resort’s official opening until 1946. The first chairlift, the Wildcat, debuted that year, ushering in a new era for Snowbasin. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the resort continued to expand, with new lodges, chairlifts, and runs catering to a growing number of skiers.

Olympic Glory and Beyond

A significant turning point arrived in 1978 when Snowbasin underwent a name change to “Snowbasin.” This period also saw significant investment from owner Earl Holding. Snowbasin’s unique terrain, with its combination of wide-open bowls, challenging steeps, and perfectly groomed runs, caught the eye of the International Olympic Committee. In 2002, Snowbasin had the honor of hosting the downhill, combined, and super-G alpine skiing events for the Salt Lake Winter Olympics. This cemented Snowbasin’s reputation as a world-class ski destination.

Today, Snowbasin Resort thrives as a modern ski resort, continually upgrading its facilities while staying true to its rich history. Whether carving down Olympic-caliber runs or enjoying the breathtaking scenery, visitors to Snowbasin can appreciate the legacy of a resort that has been a fixture in the world of skiing for over eight decades.
