Solitude Mountain Resort: A Haven for Skiers Since the 1960s

Early Days: A Dream Takes Shape

Solitude Mountain Resort Webcams. Nestled in the heart of Big Cottonwood Canyon, Solitude Mountain Resort boasts a rich history intertwined with Utah’s love for winter sports. The story begins in the 1960s with Maurice Miller, a Utah businessman with a vision of a skier’s paradise. He envisioned a resort that offered a unique experience, one that prioritized tranquility and escape from the hustle and bustle.

From Farmland to Ski Slopes

The land that Solitude now occupies was originally part of a working ranch. Miller, along with a group of investors, acquired the property and began the process of transforming it into a ski resort. Construction commenced in 1965, and by the winter of 1968, the first Doppelmayr double chairlift whisked eager skiers up the slopes.

Growth and Recognition

Solitude quickly gained recognition for its exceptional snow quality, thanks to the region’s annual average of 500 inches. The resort expanded throughout the 1970s and 80s, adding new lifts, trails, and amenities. Solitude remained true to its original identity, however, cultivating a reputation for being less crowded and more family-friendly compared to other resorts in the area.

A Legacy of Tranquility

Today, Solitude Mountain Resort continues to thrive, offering over 1,200 acres of skiable terrain with a focus on beginner and intermediate slopes. The resort has embraced its unique character, living up to its name by providing a peaceful escape for skiers and snowboarders seeking a pristine mountain experience.
