Deep Roots: A Land Shaped by People and Time
For over 10,000 years, various cultures have called Canyonlands home. The Ancestral Puebloan people left behind granaries and rock art, hinting at their lives amidst the canyons. Ute and Navajo tribes followed, adapting to the rugged environment. Evidence of their presence can still be found in archeological sites throughout the park.
Explorers Forge a Path
The arrival of European explorers in the 19th century marked a new chapter. John Wesley Powell, a daring river explorer, navigated the treacherous Green and Colorado Rivers through Canyonlands in the late 1800s. His expeditions paved the way for further exploration and resource extraction.
A Park is Born: Protecting a National Treasure
The 20th century saw a growing appreciation for the unique beauty of Canyonlands. In the 1930s, proposals for a national monument emerged, but faced opposition. It wasn’t until the 1950s, with the tireless efforts of National Park Service Superintendent Bates Wilson, that the tide began to turn. Wilson championed the creation of a park encompassing the breathtaking vistas of Canyonlands. Finally, in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the legislation establishing Canyonlands National Park.
Today, Canyonlands National Park encompasses over 337,500 acres, safeguarding its spectacular canyons, mesas, and buttes. From the dramatic overlooks of Island in the Sky to the labyrinthine canyons of The Maze, visitors can explore a landscape sculpted by time and witness the enduring legacy of those who came before.
